In 2020, many peoples' dreams came true – there is no need to go somewhere for work, communicate with colleagues without necessity (heaven for introverts), etc. There is only a comfortable home, cozy atmosphere, a cup of home-made coffee, and a laptop.
But here is a tricky thing – because of this “heaven,” you forgot that work air also should be there. You could be so deeply immersed in the comfort that it will destabilize you and your work quality. So, here are some best etiquette tips to employ at the home office.
One of the main benefits of a remote format is flexibility. You can start and finish when you want, take a break when you need, and so on. But it is important to have a simple schedule. Post your regular work hours in your calendar, so your colleagues will see when you are able for calls and meetings. If you need some time to be away for a personal reason, then indicate that slot in that calendar.
A face-to-face connection is necessary when you are not sharing one space and it is not only about team spirit. Cooperation only through emails could prolong the work processes, especially if you need to clarify something immediately. Touch base with your colleagues using video conferencing platforms that are the most suitable for you. Perform live streaming, screen sharing, recording, GIF reactions via various tools as it is the best communication channel that you can have now.
As a remote worker, you have the possibility to plan your day up to you. But don’t forget, that other your colleagues also could do that. Respect their plans, time zones, and time after work. If your case isn’t urgent, do not schedule a meeting for the early morning and don’t ping them with messages at night, only because you have an inspiration for work. And do not be late for meetings as there are almost no excuses if you work from home. At least, try to inform your colleagues about it.
One of the advantages of remote work is that you can join many meetings from your cozy home. That is why your pajamas probably are your main daily wardrobe. But it isn’t ok even if you work with bloggers or influencers. During important video conferences you should have a business attire, so make sure your outfit is appropriate.
Of course, it is not a full list of best practices for remote workers and it isn’t strict as work settings and models are far different in each company. But don’t excuse yourself and try to implement the best tips for your personal home schedule. As your comfort should not reduce your productivity and spoil the reputation, right?
