How to Set Up Remote Work Environment

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we look at work. It became obvious that employees can do their work at home as productively as from the office. That’s why, more and more employers started allowing their teams to work remotely part- or full-time, and statistics report that 25% of all jobs in North America will be remote by the end of 2022.
If you’re planning to switch to remote work mode, too, we recommend setting up the right environment for it first. This way, the transition will be comfortable, and you will have everything to keep doing your job as effectively as in the office.

Not sure where to start?

We have three helpful tips here for you.

Find a Suitable Place in Your Home

Rule number one is to find a quiet space where you can focus on your work. So, if you have a big household, make sure to establish ground rules that you will not be available within a given period of time, therefore, you should not be disturbed.

When it comes to organizing the remote workplace, make sure to follow these recommendations:

  • Natural light. Your health is of utmost priority, and you shouldn’t strain your eyes sitting in a dark room. Find a place near a window and equip your workspace with a daylight lamp in case it gets cloudy and gloomy outside.
  • Fresh air. You will spend several hours a day in your home office, so it should be properly ventilated.
  • Appropriate furniture. This is an investment you should absolutely make as it will impact how comfortable you feel during your workday. Make sure to purchase an orthopaedic chair that supports your back and a table with regulated height as it has proven to relieve low back pain.
Adding plants and greenery to your workspace can also help you work more productively. Plants make the air in the room cleaner and saturate it with oxygen, helping your brain function properly.

Get All the Necessary Devices Ready

Speaking about investments, you will have to equip your home office with some devices that will boost your efficiency. Some of them are a must-have to do your job.

First of all, you will need to invest in a good computer or laptop with enough memory and a good graphics card. You will rely on your computer for all work-related tasks, so don’t be stingy when picking one. Battery life also matters here - it will allow you to work from a cafe or a coworking space without dragging around the charger. You can also take it to your Spanish classes or other courses to be able to study from everywhere.

Apart from that, you may want to invest in a good web camera, headphones, and a microphone to use during meetings. Depending on the nature of your work, you may also need other devices, such as a camera, if you’re producing visual content for a company.

By the way, don’t be afraid to ask your employer to cover some of the expenses on these devices if you need them to do your jobs. The same goes for online tools, which we will discuss in our next section.

Equip Yourself with Online Tools

Similar to devices, you will need a set of online tools to help you do your job as efficiently as in the office. Aside from the solutions directly related to your work, you will also need the following:

  • Video conferencing tools. Since you’ll be working remotely, you will need a video conferencing solution to run meetings, webinars, and other online events. eyeson offers such a solution with full automation, options for shared files with cloud storage, and many other perks.
  • Team chat apps. Email is not always an appropriate mode of communication, and if you need to send a quick message, it’s better to use chat apps such as Slack or Chanty to reach out to other team members.
  • Cloud storage. Investing in a good cloud storage solution will help you keep important files and documents safe and share them with other colleagues within your company.
  • Project management software. This solution is essential for tracking deadlines and monitoring your daily schedule to make sure you’re not behind in your work assignments.
  • Online security tools. VPNs, encryption tools, and antivirus software help ensure that your personal and company data is not endangered and doesn’t get into the wrong hands.
If all these tools are available on your work computer, ask your employer if you can take it home. This way, you can save a great deal. Besides, not all employers allow doing work-related tasks from personal computers.

Over to You

As you can see, setting up a remote work environment is not that big of a challenge - you just need the right space, necessary tools, and devices to get started.

First of all, organize a room to make it comfortable for working. It should have natural light, proper ventilation, and the right furniture. Next, make sure to invest in all necessary devices, from a good laptop to headphones and a webcam. Finally, equip yourself with the tools you need to do your work, such as project management software, team chat applications, and video conferencing solutions.

Once you have all that, your home office is all set!
